Tourist shop of the year 2010
Gullkunst Helgu, (Helga’s Golden Artwork) jewelry shop at Laugavegur, received the Njardarskjoldur Prize as Tourist shop of the year 2010. The Prize, which is hosted by the City of Reykjavik, is granted to the best and most innovative shop for tourists each year.
Use of Icelandic Lava and Rock
This year’s winner Gullkunst Helgu specializes in Icelandic jewelry. The shop was very successful in selling to foreign guests, but the shop is elegant as well, with a wide selection of Icelandic jewelry design.
Helga Jónsdóttir, Sveinn Guðnason and other goldsmiths at the store have used fresh Icelandic lava and rocks for a long time and have made it trendy and popular.
The layout of the store, which is the largest jewelry shop in Iceland, resembles an art gallery where visitors can view the jewelry in special lit up boxes made of teak and glass. Helga first opened the store at Laugavegur 40, moved to nr. 45 a few years later and opened the new store at nr 13 in 2005. Helga has been loyal to Reykjavik’s main shopping street from day one.
Helga says that foreign tourists are surprised over how many jewelers and designers have shops in downtown Reykjavik and that the quality comes as a pleasant surprise.
